Is Equality the American Dream>?
In this TED Talk, Mellody Hobson discusses equality, or the lack thereof, among races. This relates directly to Langston Hughes's poem, I, Too. Hobson mentions the example of how her friend ran for Senate in the hopes of bringing diversity to Congress. Similarly, in Hughes's poem, he explains how the "dark brother" of America receives unequal treatment from its white counterparts. Hobson goes on to talk about how important representation of African Americans in the media is for younger generations. She wants young children to look at the television and say "That person looks like me!". Additionally, Hobson is advocating for equal opportunities for people of color, especially for African Americans. She wishes for all races to have equal access to educational and social chances . This goes hand in hand with the line from I, Too "They’ll see how beautiful I am and be ashamed". She believes once equal chance is presented, society will become more accepting of people of color. Hobson, similar to Hughes, wants people to accept others of differing races, backgrounds, and ethnicities. They both advocate for change in the mindset of white Americans. They believe that once this change occurs, we will have true equality among races.
